Touring with a Birdwatcher Who Understands Nature and Habitat Like the Avians Themselves
Embarking on a bird-watching journey is a unique experience, especially when your guide possesses an innate understanding of nature and habitat, much like the birds themselves. Recently, I had the pleasure of delving into the avian wonders of Kaladungi and Manila with none other than the remarkable Mrs. Sheela Panwar.
A Warm Welcome in Kaladungi:
Stepping off the train from Delhi on a supposed chilly morning of December 19, 2023, I found myself at the welcoming home of my dear friend Rajesh Rawer in Kaladungi. Having spent the last five years in Sydney, the cold wasn't as severe, and the warmth of Rajesh and Sheela's hospitality made me feel right at home. Operating an exceptional birdwatching and guide homestay called Aviantrails, they offer enchanting accommodations both in Kaladunghi and Manila. Nestled amidst the pristine beauty of nature, their homestays provide a perfect retreat for bird enthusiasts. Despite being a 24/7 non-vegetarian, staying with Rajesh and Sheela turns me into a devoted vegetarian. The exquisite taste and diverse variety of vegetarian dishes they offer are so enticing that you won't even feel like you're missing out on anything. Little did I know that this trip would turn into an extraordinary bird-watching adventure.
Bird-Watching Dynamic Duo:
Rajesh, a renowned bird guide, had a surprise in store for me. Due to his busy schedule, he arranged for Sheela, his wife and a fellow bird enthusiast, to be my bird-watching companion. This dynamic duo proved to be a perfect match, and our journey kicked off after a delightful lunch.
Astonishing Expertise Unveiled:
In the first three minutes, Sheela's keen eyes spotted an owl in the soft light, setting the tone for what would be an incredible bird-watching experience. As we ventured into familiar tracks towards Nainital, Sheela's profound understanding of birds and their habitats became evident. For three mesmerizing hours, we explored the village surroundings, and I was captivated by her knowledge.
Manila Magic:
Our bird-watching escapade continued, taking us to different places, including the challenging terrain of Manila, above Almora, Uttaranchal. Here, our quest for the elusive Cheer Pheasant unfolded, and Sheela's expertise truly shone. Playing the bird's call, persisting against the odds, we ventured 2km beyond the usual spot, led only by Sheela's intuition. In the dimming light, we heard the response, and what followed was a magical encounter with a large flock of Cheer Pheasants, a sighting that lasted over 30 minutes.
An Honorable Journey:
Throughout the trip, I witnessed countless bird-watching moments orchestrated by Mrs. Sheela Panwar, each more spectacular than the last. It was an honor to accompany her in the field, where her deep understanding of habitats and bird behaviors transformed a simple expedition into an extraordinary adventure.
As I bid farewell to Kaladungi and Manila, I carry with me the hope of walking alongside Sheela on another birding trail in the future, eager for more awe-inspiring avian encounters.
